The LIV Golf tour has become a competitor to the PGA Tour, which is based in the United States, as a result of the fact that a number of prominent golfers have moved across the pond to participate in the fledgling golf league.
Heavy hitters who used to compete on the PGA Tour, such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Brooks Koepka, are now competing on a golf circuit that is backed by Saudi Arabia and is making waves in other parts of the world (and soon in the U.S.). In response to the players’ decisions to leave the PGA Tour, commissioner Jay Monahan did not take any lenient action. Because of this, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and a few other players won’t be able to compete in PGA Tour events.

Why are golfers playing on the PGA Tour at LIV Golf?
In a single word: Cash. In a number of additional words: cash, moolah, green, dough, and shekels.
The Public Investment Fund of the Saudi Arabian government backs and finances LIV Golf; this is the source of the controversy surrounding the company. Dustin Johnson, a former world No. 1 golfer who later defected to LIV Golf, had a career earnings total of $74,276,710 earned through his play on the course. Johnson has reportedly agreed to a four-year deal with LIV Golf worth a total of $125 million.
In addition to the substantial sums of money that are given to former PGA players, current players have a less demanding schedule and can earn a larger paycheck for winning certain tournaments. For instance, the winner of the first-ever LIV Golf event, which took place in London and was won by Charl Schwartzel, was awarded a prize package worth $4 million. This sum is greater than that awarded to the winner of any major tournament.
Why Phil Mickelson decided to sign up for the LIV Golf Tour
In addition to the significant sum of money, “Lefty” views the transition to the new tour as a “new beginning.”

In February, Mickelson had expressed his support for the newly formed league, stating that he believed it to be “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates.”
In a conversation with Alan Shipnuck in February, Phil Mickelson said of the PGA Tour, “They’ve been able to get by with manipulative, coercive, strong-arm tactics because we, the players, had no recourse.” Mickelson was referring to the fact that the players had no option but to comply with the tour’s demands. Even though (PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan) seems like a really nice person, if you don’t have any influence over him, he won’t do what’s right. Because of the money provided by Saudi Arabia, we finally have that leverage. I’m not even sure that I want (LIV Golf) to be successful, but the very concept of it is making it possible for us to get things done with the PGA Tour.
According to reports, Mickelson has agreed to a deal with the new tour that is worth $200 million.
Why Dustin Johnson chose to play on the LIV Golf Tour?
Although Dustin Johnson’s involvement with LIV Golf came as something of a surprise, the fact that he signed a contract with the company and received financial compensation for doing so speaks volumes about his decision. Reportedly worth $125 million over the course of four years, Johnson signed a contract.
After having a change of heart, he explained why he decided to become a member of LIV Golf:
In reference to his first statement, Johnson explained, “At that time, I was committed to playing the PGA Tour.” “I have a lot of gratitude for the PGA Tour and everything that it has done for me. For the past 15 years, I’ve been pretty successful in that arena. But this was the decision that was best for me and my family as a whole. It’s something exciting and brand new at the same time.”
Johnson, a former world No. 1 golfer, competed on the PGA Tour from 2007 until 2022 and won a total of 24 PGA tournaments during his career on the tour.
Why Bryson DeChambeau chose to participate in the LIV Golf Tour
One of the first players that LIV Golf had their sights set on for their tour was DeChambeau, who is 28 years old. Late in the month of June, he made his official departure to the circuit, but not before declining initial offers to join the tour.
To put it another way, there was nothing personal behind DeChambeau’s decision; it was made solely for business reasons.

Why Brooks Koepka decided to become a member of the LIV Golf Tour
After the conclusion of the U.S. Open, Koepka became the newest heavy hitter to sign with LIV Golf.
The golfer who has won four major championships avoided questions about LIV Golf during his availability to the media in the days leading up to the major championship. He chose to ignore inquiries about whether or not he would consider joining the tour.
Three days after the conclusion of the U.S. Open and one day after Koepka withdrew from the PGA Tour event that is taking place this week in Connecticut, LIV officially welcomed Koepka to its ranks.
Koepka, who controls his own schedule on the PGA Tour, is likely attracted to LIV Golf in part because of the tour’s more condensed schedule.

LIV Golf has upended the established order of the golf world, for better or worse, depending on who you ask. Opponents of the tour have expressed disappointment that its biggest draws have betrayed the PGA Tour, where they first made their names. Others have expressed disdain for participating in a tour sponsored by Saudi investors, citing the country’s history of human rights violations.
Those who have joined LIV Golf, on the other hand, believe it can improve the way golf operates; PGA defectors, meanwhile, dismiss the notion that they have betrayed anyone by simply playing on a new tour.

Is LIV Golf on television?
LIV Golf is not currently broadcast on television. It has no TV rights agreements in place, whereas its main competitor, the PGA Tour, recently signed nine-year deals with CBS, NBC, and ESPN+ to broadcast event coverage through 2030. Though no figures have been released, the deal is said to be worth $700 million per year, totaling more than $6 billion over the course of the agreement.
LIV Golf’s best chance of landing a TV rights deal in America is with Fox, which hasn’t shown much interest in broadcasting the sport. The network opted out of the remaining seven years on its contract to broadcast USGA events, including the US Open, in June 2020. It licenced the rights to NBC.
LIV Golf appears to have a long-term goal of securing a broadcast partner beginning in the 2023 calendar year. According to the Sports Business Journal, one anonymous LIV executive stated that the tour’s goal is to secure a broadcast partner:
The chances that LIV Golf events will be broadcast on either linear or OTT/streaming platforms in 2023, a LIV executive said, is ‘very high. We absolutely know we need TV partners.’

Plans for the LIV Golf Tour in 2023 were disclosed, including a 14-event calendar and a team format comeback
LIV Golf Bedminster is the third of eight tournaments starting on Friday, but it appears that LIV Golf will return for a second season.
The contentious Saudi-backed startup has already snatched up a number of prominent PGA Tour players, and the breakaway organisation has retaliated by suspending players who join it indefinitely. However, LIV Golf has been driving with no breaks, thus it is currently making judgments about the future.
In its second season, it will increase from eight to fourteen tournaments while maintaining the 48-player, 12-team structure. These activities, according to a press release, will take place throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America.
