Russia have been excluded from EURO 2024 qualifiers because of the ongoing war in Ukraine

The European Union Football Association (UEFA) and the Russian Football Federation both confirmed on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, that Russia will not be taking part in the draw for the qualifying matches for the Euro 2024 tournament. As a result of the ban that was imposed by UEFA following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russia is not permitted to take part in the qualifying rounds for the Euro 2024 tournament. The prohibition on Russia participating in major tournaments did not take effect until February 2022. As a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year, the country’s national team and clubs are no longer allowed to play in international competitions.

In a statement, the governing body of football in Europe said: “All Russian teams are currently suspended after the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee on February 28, 2022, which has further been affirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on July 15, 2022.”

“Russia is excluded from the UEFA European Football Championship qualification draw for 2022–24.”

It is important to keep in mind that the Russian team had already qualified for the European qualifying round prior to the invasion of Ukraine that was ordered by Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia. The Russian Football Federation had launched an appeal against the suspension in an effort to get UEFA’s verdict overturned, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in July that the ban should remain in place. The Russian Football Union has emphasized that it is awaiting the entire text of the CAS judgment before making any further decisions.

You may recall that FIFA made the decision to exclude Russia from participating in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022 as a direct result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year. Additionally, the Russian women’s national team was replaced by the Portuguese women’s squad at the European Championships held in England this year. As a direct consequence of this, the senior men’s national team has not participated in a competition in more than ten months. However, the friendly match between Russia and Kyrgyzstan that is set to take place this weekend will go on as planned.

The Bosnian and Herzegovina Football Association has announced that a friendly match versus Russia has been organized for the month of November, despite the fact that there is now an international ban in place. The qualification draw for the European Championship 2024 will take place in Frankfurt on October 9th. The tournament will be hosted in Germany in 2024. Because of Belarus’s support for Russia, the German minister of the interior has also asked that the country be eliminated from the tournament.

As a direct consequence of Russia’s elimination and Germany’s advancement to the next round automatically, the remaining 53 countries will be split up into seven groups of five teams and three groups of six teams, respectively. The ten group winners and ten group runners-up qualify for a spot in the finals. The remaining three spots are determined via playoffs that will take place in March 2024. Using the overall rankings from the 2022–2023 UEFA Nations League, the 53 participating nations will be seeded and then placed into one of seven different pots.

The conclusion of the Champions League match in 2022 was similarly affected by Russia’s actions. The match was supposed to take place in St. Petersburg, but UEFA agreed to relocate it to Paris just one day after the invasion took place. At this point in time, it is impossible to predict when Russia will be given permission to take part in any competitions held by FIFA or UEFA.
