How does the NBA Supermax work?

Let’s look at the max contracts first before moving on to the supermax. A maximum pay starting at 25% of the team’s salary limit is available to players with at least six years of NBA experience. This rises to thirty percent for players with seven to nine years of experience, and thirty-five percent for those with ten or more years of experience. The supermax rule allows players who meet certain criteria to earn the maximum 35 percent wage without having 10 or more years of experience. With an annual increase of 8%, the supermax lets teams re-sign qualified players for up to 35% of the wage limit for a maximum of five years. The “Designated Veteran Player Extension” is another name for this. As the name suggests, this contract is only for players who have been in the NBA for at least seven years.

What criteria must a player meet in order to be eligible for a Supermax?

The following qualifies as NBA supermax eligibility: First, in order to be eligible to sign a supermax contract, a player must have at least seven years of NBA experience at the end of his current contract. This can come from either the team that picked him in the draft or the team that traded for his rookie contract.

Second, for supermax performance, a player must meet at least one of the following:

Been named to two or more All-NBA teams in the previous three seasons.
I own at least two Defensive Player of the Year awards from the previous three seasons.
I won the MVP award in one of the previous three seasons.

What is a Supermax contract’s duration?

The number of NBA seasons the player has played and the number of years left on his present contract determine the duration of the supermax contract. The two supermax contracts are as follows:

A player that qualifies and has seven or eight years of NBA experience and two years left on his contract will receive a four-year supermax contract.
A player who meets the requirements and has seven or eight years of NBA experience, one year left on his deal, or is currently a free agent, will be offered a five-year supermax contract.

The NBA Supermax contract also forbids teams from trading a player for a year following the signing of the contract.

What if a player fulfills the supermax requirements while still under contract?

Outstanding players have been chosen for All-NBA teams, the DPOY, and the MVP while still under rookie contracts. These athletes qualify for “Rose Rule” contracts. Teams may offer them a starting maximum pay of 30% of the cap instead of the standard 25%. Unofficially, this rule is named after Derrick Rose, the youngest MVP.
